Dear friend,
It’s not easy to be a Christian. I wish older believers that I grew up around would have been more willing to admit this. Too often the sense that I got in conservative evangelicalism was that if the Christian life or faith was hard for you, the problem was that you weren’t the right kind of Christian. I was much older when I realized that the world, the flesh, and the devil are not cute whack-a-mole enemies that can be handled by anybody paying attention, but cosmic powers capable of the most horrifying warfare imaginable. You should know that the crisis you’re going through is one that nearly all honest Christians experience, and many more than once. Why we should act surprised that taking up our cross is so painful as to periodically wonder if it’s really worth, I have no idea.
