You see the same dynamic in other places, everywhere from politics to media criticism. The term I've seen used for it is "nutpicking," and it's one of the most pernicious forms of clickbait, because it takes some rando who 90% of the people on their side would think takes it too far and presents them as being a representative of that side.
A moderate and thoughtful opinion. Unfortunately, moderation in the face of evil (and yes, strangling your children is evil) begets more evil. Christ himself had a few things to say about the lukewarm. Chiding Walsh for saying spiteful things and drawing a false equivalence with his words and the words of people defending the evil act further degrades our ability as a society to morally condemn evil.
The Apostles had no experience being daughters, wives, or mothers, yet they still found themselves able to chastise women, sometimes in terms our "enlightened" society would consider "mean." Empathy is not a suicide pact. The entire problem with this discourse is that we're talking about empathy instead of the simple condemnation of unimaginable cruelty Clancy subjected her children to. That should have been the end of the conversation. Instead, we're circling the drain on tone policing. The appeals to "can't we all just get along?" might sound good on paper, but they're not operational in the reality we live in. I'll acknowledge that women are victims in the propaganda war, but it's a war, and many have elected to become partisans. Lashing out at men who recognize it and try to defend themselves is only going to widen the divide you are trying to close.
I pray regularly against the isolationist tendencies of technology. It seems to be part of the enemy's strategy of separation, division and discord, especially breaking down the family and undermining it's foundational place in a civilized society.
